A joint security operation has successfully thwarted bandit attacks on Kanoma Town and Gidan Daji Village in the Kanoma District of Maru Local Government Area, Zamfara State, resulting in the death of six suspected bandits.
According to a statement issued by the Zamfara State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Yazid Abubakar, the attack occurred on Tuesday when a large group of armed bandits invaded the communities with sophisticated weapons, including rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs), general-purpose machine guns (GPMGs), anti-aircraft guns, and AK-47 rifles.
Abubakar said security operatives responded immediately after receiving a distress call.
The response team comprised police tactical operatives from the Maru Division, military personnel attached to Operation Fansan Yamma, officers of the Violence Crime Response Unit (VCRU), and local vigilantes under the leadership of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO).
The combined security team engaged the attackers in a fierce gun battle, forcing them to retreat before they could carry out their mission.
During the operation, six bandits travelling on two motorcycles were neutralised.
The police spokesperson disclosed that several other suspects escaped into nearby forests with suspected gunshot injuries sustained during the exchange of fire.
He noted that no casualties were recorded among security personnel or residents of the affected communities.
To prevent further attacks, security has been reinforced across the area, with continuous patrols aimed at maintaining peace and tracking down fleeing suspects.
The police command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property, urging residents to continue supporting security efforts by providing timely and credible information that could aid ongoing operations.
