THE World Bank has ranked Nigeria’s Lagos ports, Apapa and Tin Can Island, among the world’s 20 most improved container ports over the past five years.

The ranking was contained in the 2025 Container Port Performance Index (CPPI), compiled by the World Bank in collaboration with S&P Global Market Intelligence.

According to the report, Tin Can Island Port Complex placed 10th globally in terms of improvement, while Apapa Port Complex ranked 12th.

The CPPI measures port efficiency based on vessel turnaround time and overall operational performance, providing a global benchmark for container port productivity.

The report showed that Tin Can Island Port improved its performance score by 42 points, moving from -68 in 2020 to -26 in 2025. Apapa Port also recorded significant gains, improving by 35 points from -61 to -26 over the same period.

The performance highlights Nigeria’s progress in enhancing cargo handling capacity and reducing delays in port operations.

The improvements have been linked to reforms and efficiency measures implemented by the Nigerian Ports Authority in recent years.

Nigeria ranked among countries with the most notable improvements globally, ahead of several major ports, including Marseille in France, Iskenderun in Türkiye, and Jawaharlal Nehru Port in India.

Other ports featured in the top improvement list include Paita Port in Peru and key Chinese ports such as Keelung and Fuzhou.

The report noted that Nigeria’s progress in port efficiency has contributed to improved trade flows and strengthened its position in global maritime logistics over the evaluation period.
