THE Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State has officially unveiled Yemi Sowunmi-Kolapo as its deputy governorship candidate ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
Sowunmi-Kolapo was presented today at the party secretariat in Abeokuta as running mate to the PDP governorship candidate, Oladipupo Adebutu, in a ceremony attended by party leaders, stakeholders, youth groups, and supporters from across the state.
Prominent figures at the event included Ogun PDP chairman Abayomi Tella and Senator Iyabo Obasanjo, among other party stakeholders.
In her acceptance remarks, Sowunmi-Kolapo expressed gratitude to the party leadership for the confidence placed in her, describing her nomination as a call to greater service and commitment to the people of Ogun State.
She pledged loyalty to the party and its governorship candidate, promising to contribute her experience in media, communication, and public service toward advancing development in the state.
“Our mission is to restore hope to the people of Ogun State by ensuring inclusive governance that prioritises economic growth, youth empowerment, education, healthcare, and infrastructure,” she said.
She also urged party members to intensify grassroots mobilisation ahead of the elections, stressing that unity and voter engagement would be key to electoral success.
Speaking at the event, Adebutu described his running mate as a “competent, experienced and compassionate leader,” adding that her selection followed extensive consultations within the party.
He said the PDP ticket represents a credible alternative for Ogun residents, promising job creation, industrial development, and improved infrastructure if elected.
Adebutu also expressed confidence in the party’s readiness for the 2027 elections, noting that internal cohesion and strong candidates position the PDP for victory.
Earlier, Ogun PDP chairman Abayomi Tella urged party members to remain united and intensify mobilisation across all local government areas, expressing optimism about the party’s chances at the polls.
Sowunmi-Kolapo brings over 26 years of experience in journalism, corporate communications, and public affairs. She is a former Group Business Editor of The Punch Newspapers and founder of a media and communications consultancy firm.
Her career spans editorial leadership, government advisory roles, and entrepreneurship, with past service including roles in public communication strategy within Nigeria’s federal ministries.
Party supporters at the event described her emergence as a major boost to the PDP’s political strategy in the state, citing her experience and grassroots appeal.
