NIGERIA’S state governors have renewed their support for the creation of state police and ongoing reforms aimed at improving the country’s electricity sector.

The position was contained in a communiqué released after the second meeting of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) held yesterday, where governors discussed a range of national issues and development priorities.

According to the communiqué, the governors held consultations with state Attorneys-General to examine proposed constitutional amendments and legal frameworks related to key policy decisions, including the establishment of state police.

The governors stressed that any framework for state policing must be firmly rooted in constitutional provisions, respect the principles of federalism, and safeguard the rights of citizens.

They noted that the ongoing consultations would help states develop a unified position on the matter and contribute to a more robust legal foundation for the initiative.

The forum also reviewed progress on the National Nutrition 774 (N-774) Initiative following a presentation by the Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning.

Governors reiterated their commitment to tackling malnutrition and improving nutrition outcomes, particularly among children.

In addition, they acknowledged efforts to advance the proposed National Nutrition Bill and encouraged continued collaboration among stakeholders to strengthen policies and legislation supporting nutrition governance across the country.

The meeting further featured a briefing from the World Bank’s Nigeria office on its proposed Country Partnership Framework for the 2026–2032 fiscal period, as well as the Nigeria Sustainable Agricultural Value-Chains for Growth (AGROW) Programme.

The initiative is designed to boost agricultural productivity, strengthen value chains, encourage private-sector investment, improve food security, and support early childhood development.

Governors expressed support for continued cooperation between state governments, the Federal Government, the World Bank, and other development partners to ensure the successful implementation of the programmes and maximise their impact across participating states.

They also approved targeted interventions tailored to individual states and emphasised the need for stronger coordination among sectors such as health, education, nutrition, water and sanitation, social welfare, and family support services.

On energy development, the forum considered the proposed National Solar Super-Grid initiative, a project aimed at expanding electricity access through large-scale solar power generation linked to a national transmission network.

The governors observed that the initiative could play a significant role in enhancing energy security, supporting industrial growth, strengthening state electricity markets, and accelerating economic development nationwide.

Reaffirming their commitment to power sector reforms, the governors pledged continued collaboration with relevant stakeholders to improve access to reliable and affordable electricity for Nigerians.
