PRESIDENT Bola Tinubu has reiterated his administration’s commitment to leveraging emerging technologies to combat insecurity and strengthen the protection of lives and property across Nigeria.

The President said the Federal Government is prioritising the modernisation of the Armed Forces through investments in advanced military equipment, improved personnel training, and enhanced operational planning.

Speaking through Vice President Kashim Shettima at the grand finale of the 2026 Nigerian Army Day Celebration and the African Land Forces Forum (ALFF) in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Tinubu said his administration remains focused on adopting intelligence-driven and technology-enabled military operations to address evolving security threats.

The event, themed “Protecting the Nation and Serving the People: A Way Forward for the Nigerian Army,” brought together military leaders and stakeholders from across Africa.

According to the President, sustained investment in research and development will play a vital role in strengthening military technology and encouraging indigenous innovation.

He said the ongoing revitalisation of the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON), alongside strategic partnerships such as the African Land Forces Forum, reflects the government’s determination to boost local production of military hardware while creating employment opportunities for skilled professionals.

Tinubu noted that although previous administrations had taken steps to revive DICON, his government is committed to fully modernising the institution to improve the Nigerian Airlines Army’s ability to respond effectively to emerging security challenges.

He also described the African Land Forces Forum as an important platform for promoting defence diplomacy, enhancing military cooperation, and advancing homegrown security solutions across the continent.

The President lauded the Nigerian Armed Forces for their dedication and professionalism, describing them as a symbol of selfless service and a source of pride for both Nigeria and Africa.

He said the military’s contributions to combating insecurity extend beyond the country’s borders and continue to support regional and global peace and stability.

Paying tribute to fallen soldiers, Tinubu assured that the sacrifices of those who lost their lives in service to the nation would always be remembered.

He also pledged continued support for their families, emphasising that the nation remains indebted to their courage and commitment.

The President commended the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, and the organisers of the maiden joint Nigerian Army Day Celebration and African Land Forces Forum for fostering greater collaboration, innovation, and strategic dialogue on defence and security issues across Africa.

In his remarks, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara described the hosting of the event as evidence of the return of peace and stability in the state despite contrary perceptions.

He also called on the Federal Government to further improve the welfare of military personnel in recognition of their service to the nation.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to defending the country’s territorial integrity and protecting citizens.

He noted that the changing security landscape continues to shape the Army’s operational strategies while commending officers and soldiers serving in various theatres of operation for their dedication and sacrifices.

Shaibu also thanked President Tinubu for his continued support of the Nigerian Army and assured him of the unwavering loyalty and commitment of officers and personnel to national security objectives.

The ceremony featured military demonstrations, displays by various Army formations, and the presentation of the Chief of Army Staff Commendation Awards.

It was attended by several dignitaries, including former Head of State Gen. Yakubu Gowon (retd.), former President Olusegun Obasanjo, members of the National Assembly, senior government officials, service chiefs, and top military officers.
