THE presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has stressed the need for competent, accountable, and compassionate leadership to unlock Nigeria’s human and natural resources and achieve sustainable national development.

Obi made the remarks after participating in a high-level roundtable discussion titled “Nigeria in 2027 and Beyond,” organised by the European Council on Foreign Relations in Berlin, Germany.

According to him, the discussions centered on Nigeria’s democratic future beyond 2027, development cooperation, international relations, and ways to strengthen bilateral partnerships that can support economic growth.

He noted that participants showed significant interest in Nigeria’s future and reiterated his confidence that the country has the potential to become a prosperous and globally competitive nation through effective governance.

Obi maintained that Nigeria’s progress depends on leaders who prioritise investment in education, healthcare, productive enterprises, the rule of law, and strong institutions rather than politics driven by consumption.

He also emphasized the importance of making deliberate policy decisions that will shift the country from consumption to production, reduce poverty, promote national unity, and improve economic prosperity.

The former Anambra State governor added that adopting good governance, fiscal discipline, and productive international partnerships would help build an inclusive economy and restore Nigeria’s standing in the global community.

Obi further stated that the event brought together policymakers, diplomats, development experts, business leaders, representatives of international organisations, and members of the international media to deliberate on Nigeria’s future and its role on the global stage.

He expressed appreciation to the European Council on Foreign Relations for the invitation, describing such engagements as valuable opportunities to strengthen international cooperation and foster lasting partnerships.
