THE former Kano State Governor and senior National Democratic Congress (NDC) figure, Senator Kabiru Gaya, is set to return to the All Progressives Congress (APC) following a private meeting with the party’s national chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda.
The meeting, which took place on Monday night at Yilwatda’s residence on Yaounde Street in Abuja, reportedly lasted about 45 minutes.
A source familiar with the discussions confirmed that Gaya agreed to rejoin the ruling party after the closed-door meeting.
The move comes just days after reports emerged that Gaya failed to secure the NDC senatorial ticket for Kano South, despite recently joining the opposition party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Gaya resigned from the APC on April 5 before briefly joining the African Democratic Congress (ADC). He later defected to the NDC alongside former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
A veteran politician, Gaya served as governor of Kano State during Nigeria’s Third Republic between 1992 and 1993. He also represented Kano South Senatorial District in the National Assembly on the APC platform from 2015 to 2023.
In the 2023 general election, he lost his bid for a third Senate term to Abdulrahman Kawu Sumaila of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).
His planned return to the APC marks another significant shift in Kano’s political landscape as political realignments continue ahead of the 2027 general elections.
