ASISAT Oshoala has been hosted by President Bola Tinubu and the First Lady, Remi Tinubu, after her success at the recent CAF Awards.

She was received by the President and First Lady at their Lagos residence yesterday to celebrate her great feat.

The Super Falcons and Barcelona striker was named the Women’s African Player of the Year for a record-extending sixth time at the CAF Awards in Marrakech, Morocco on December 11.

She was one of four big winners for Nigeria on the big night, with Super Eagles and Napoli striker Victor Osimhen emerging as the African Player of the Year for men, Chiamaka Nnadozie of the Super Falcons and Paris FC earning the Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year prize and the Super Falcons winning the Women’s National Team of the Year award.

The President and his wife commended the 29-year-old Oshoala, who is the only person to have won the prize more than four times, with fellow Nigerian great Perpetua Nkwocha winning it four times.

“Nigerian women will always have a pride of place in the world,” President Tinubu said.

“What our ladies have achieved in football, our women are achieving in all fields of endeavour around the world — rising to the top and exhibiting the best of the Nigerian character of excellence, tenacity, ingenuity and resilience.”

Oshoala said she appreciated the President and his wife for supporting women’s football and helping to resolve a recent issue involving the Super Falcons.

Tinubu and his wife promised continuous support for the development of women’s football and other sports in Nigeria.
