ATLETICO Madrid manager Diego Simeone has called for improvement from Ademola Lookman despite the brilliant start the Super Eagles forward has had in Spain.
Lookman struck Atletico Madrid’s third goal in their 4-2 win over Espanyol last night to take Simeone’s side to level on points with third-placed Villarreal in LaLiga.
It was Lookman’s first goal in the Spanish top flight and his fourth in six games in all competitions since joining Atletico Madrid from Atalanta in January.
However, Simeone still wants more from the Nigeria international.
“Lookman brings us goals, more goals than overall play. He can still improve his overall play and defensive work,” Simeone said at his post-match press conference last night.
“We need him to adapt to the team’s way of playing in those aspects. His message is that he wants to improve as a footballer.
“He has that goal-scoring instinct, those goals he has scored are no coincidence. But we also need more from him in the overall game.”
Lookman’s four goals in his first six appearances with Atletico in all competitions is the joint-best record in the club taking into account data since 2013/14: level with Luis Suárez in 2020/2021, according to Opta statistics.
