Cooking gas price rises nationwide amid scarcity concerns

NIGERIAN’S are facing another increase in the price of cooking gas as marketers warn of growing scarcity across the country.

The Nigeria Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers disclosed that the price of liquefied petroleum gas, commonly known as cooking gas, has climbed to about N1,500 per kilogram in several locations, especially in Abuja.

The product previously sold for around N1,200 per kilogram earlier in May.

NALPGAM President, Edu Inyang, and the association’s Executive Secretary, Bassey Essien, revealed the development in a joint statement issued over the weekend.

The increase represents a rise of about N300 per kilogram, translating to roughly 25 percent.

The development is expected to place additional financial pressure on Nigerians already struggling with the high cost of living and rising household expenses.

According to the marketers, many citizens now consider the price of cooking gas too expensive for an essential household commodity.

They warned that continued increases could lead to frustration among consumers and possible tension at gas retail outlets if urgent intervention is not taken by the Federal Government.

The association also expressed concern that worsening scarcity and higher prices may trigger public backlash against cooking gas dealers across the country.

The latest increase comes despite previous assurances from industry stakeholders that cooking gas prices would stabilise or reduce in the coming months.
