AGGRIEVED youths in Oruku Community in Nkanu East local government area trooped into the streets yesterday to protest the killing of their traditional ruler, Igwe Emmanuel Chidiebere MBA.
The monarch was reportedly shot dead by a police officer while he was addressing members of his community in Oruku Town Hall.
It was learnt while the meeting was in progress, some gun-wielding policemen in multi swooped on the venue of the meeting in an SUV and a Sienna bus and killed the monarch.
This incident, which happened on Saturday, prompted the youths in the community to go on the rampage on Sunday and set houses and vehicles belonging to some members of the community ablaze.
“The traditional ruler was presiding over the meeting and the three natives pointed at him, immediately one of the policemen shot him on the thigh and he fell down bleeding. There was confusion after the royal father was shot. Everybody in the hall ran for safety,” a resident of the community was quoted to have said.
According to the resident who spoke on condition of anonymityIt the royal father, who was elected by his community on December 26, 2019, reportedly bled to death before he could get medical attention.
His corpse was deposited at the National Orthopedic Hospital mortuary.
More than four houses and some vehicles were reportedly set ablaze by the mob.
