FACEBOOK CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, has announced that its social media platform will ban President Donald Trump “indefinitely” after the attack of his supporters on the US Capitol.
Trump’s ban is an escalation as Facebook’s approach to keep the president’s posts in moderation.
“The shocking events of the last 24 hours clearly demonstrate that President Donald Trump intends to use his remaining time in office to undermine the peaceful and lawful transition of power to his elected successor, Joe Biden,” said Zuckerberg.
“We are extending the block we have placed on his Facebook and Instagram accounts indefinitely and for at least the next two weeks until the peaceful transition of power is complete.”
Facebook had removed a video posted by Trump due to words inciting violence after rioters stormed the Capitol Wednesday.
In the video, Trump made false claims concerning the 2020 election results before telling his supporters to “go home” hours after the initial invasion began.
Facebook outrightly removed the video after cycling three different labels on the video about an hour after it was posted.
“We removed [Trump’s video] because on balance we believe it contributes to rather than diminishes the risk of ongoing violence.” Facebook’s vice president of integrity, Guy Rosen, said, after declaring the Capitol riot as “an emergency situation”.
Meanwhile, Twitter had blocked Trump’s tweets on Wednesday, but no long-term ban has been issued yet.
According to Zuckerberg, the ban on President Trump’s account will not be lifted until after inauguration day.
