HOUSE Speaker Nancy Pelosi has asked for President Donald Trump’s immediate removal,
President Donald Trump should immediately be removed from office or face impeachment by Congress.
The Speaker voiced out her position, adding to the calls for the Cabinet to force Trump out of office by invoking the 25th Amendment.
The calls came as a result of Wednesday event which saw Trump-supporters storm the Capitol and laid siege to it, an anomaly which left four dead and several injured.
“The president of the United States incited an armed insurrection against America,” Pelosi said, adding that `”any day can be a horror show for America.”
Other political leaders (both Republicans and Democrats) have voiced their desire for Trump’s removal, long before President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration, over one week before the end of Trump’s term on January 20.
Senate Democratic leader, Chuck Schumer, holds the same view with Nancy Pelosi, calling on Vice President Mike Pence and the cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment and immediately remove Trump from office.
The 25th Amendment is a constitutional tool, which among other things, enables the US Vice president and a majority of the Cabinet to declare a sitting president unfit for office, with the Vice President becoming acting President
Schumer said, “If the vice president and the Cabinet refuse to stand up, Congress should reconvene to impeach the president.”
Pelosi also seeks the resignation of Capitol Police Chief, Steven Sund, after lawmakers questioned the manner in which the mob penetrated the Capitol amidst security.
“The Capitol Police will and should really do a quick review here of what went wrong and what they need to do to be sure nothing like that could happen again.” Senate Rules Committee Chairman, Roy Blunt, had said on Thursday.
Senate leader, Chuck Schumer, had said he’ll also fire the Senate Sergeant-at-Arms, Michael Stenger, if he didn’t resign.
Meanwhile, House Sergeant-at-Arms, Paul Irving, a top security official, had already submitted his resignation, according to Speaker Pelosi’s statement on Thursday.
The Capitol Police has faced harsh criticism after Wednesday’s event, with mixed reactions from Lawmakers.
