‘Thank you for everything’: Super Eagles’ Osimhen grateful to sacked Rohr

SUPER Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has expressed gratitude to Gernot Rohr, who was recently sacked as the team’s head coach.

Rohr’s appointment was terminated on Sunday, five years after his appointment as permanent replacement for the late Stephen Keshi.

Although Rohr led the Super Eagles to the African playoffs for the Qatar 2022 World Cup, and was on track to meet his target of taking them to the global competition, NFF President Amaju Pinnick insisted the German had to be fired.

Pinnick insinuated that Rohr did not enforce discipline in the squad and this reflected in some of the dire performances against what should be easy opposition, like Central African Republic, Sierra Leone and Cape Verde.

However, Osimhen, one of the biggest success stories of Rohr’s reign, has remained grateful to the coach and wishes him well in future endeavours.

“Thank you for everything, Coach,” Osimhen tweeted on Tuesday.

“And I wish you all the best.”

Osimhen, 22, was handed his Super Eagles debut by Rohr in June 2017, and the Napoli striker has scored 12 goals in 21 international appearances since then.

Indeed, Rohr is the only Super Eagles head coach Osimhen has ever played under.

The 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup top scorer started in each of the German’s last eight matches in charge of the Super Eagles, scoring six goals. He in fact scored in all the final five games if Rohr’s reign.

Osimhen is currently out of action after fracturing his facial bones and undergoing surgery, but his recovery is ahead of schedule and he still could be fit for the Africa Cup of Nations in January.
