Ese Brume joined Tobi Amusan in making Nigeria proud in the early hours of today by winning a silver medal at the Oregon 2022 World Athletics Championships.
The 26-year-old recorded a leap of 7.02 metres to finish second and win the women’s long jump silver medal.
Defending champion Malaika Mihambo, who also won gold at Tokyo 2020 Olympics where Brume won bronze, claimed the world title with a season’s best jump of 7.09m.
Brazilian Leticia Oro Melo leapt to a personal best of 6.89m to win the bronze medal just ahead of United States of America’s Quanesha Burks, who did 6.88m.
With her medal in Oregon, USA, Brume made history as she became the first African (male or female) to win two long jump medals at the World Athletics Championships.
The 26-year-old from Delta State had won her first World Athletics Championships medal in 2019 when she claimed bronze in Doha, Qatar.
Back then, she became the second Nigerian and African woman after Blessing Okagbare to make the long jump podium at the global championships.
Brume has now won four global medals outdoors and indoors.
After Doha, she won bronze at the Tokyo Olympics last year and followed up with silver at her first-ever World Indoor Championships in Belgrade, Serbia in March this year.
Brume’s compatriot in the women’s long jump in Oregon, Ruth Usoro, finished 11th overall with her best leap of 6.52m.
