Amuneke named coach of Zambia’s Zanaco, vows to succeed

Former Super Eagles player and coach Emmanuel Amuneke has taken up a coaching role in Zambia with Zanaco Football Club.

The club, one of the biggest in Zambia, presented the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations winner and Atlanta 1996 Olympics gold medallist as their coaching consultant yesterday, and he will be in charge of first team affairs.

“Zanaco Football Club Consultant Coach Emmanuel Amuneke was unveiled on Thursday morning at Zanaco Bank Plc Head Office,” the club announced today on their official website.

“Mr. Amuneke has joined Zanaco with his assistant Emeka Amadi.”

Amuneke, who has coached in Tanzania and with the Nigeria U-17s, U-20s and the Super Eagles, said he was looking forward to working in Zambia.

“It is my first time coaching in Zambia,” the former Zamalek and Barcelona star said.

“I am bringing my experience to the Zambian League and hoping to pass it on to the coaches here and hoping they grow more than myself.

“I will be happy to see the players that will pass under me to do better.”

The 1994 African Footballer of the Year, who led the Golden Eaglets to win the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2015, promised to give the Zanaco job his total commitment.

“I can guarantee you that we will work hard, at times you will see me play on the field with players the players so that we can give them confidence and hope they can be better than us coaches,” the 51-year-old vowed. “I want to help the players grow.”

Zanaco are currently 12th in the Zambian Premier League table, but they have won the title seven times in the last 20 years and finished as runners-up in 2021.
