GARLANDS have been pouring in for foremost art director, cinematographer, editor, producer, and scriptwriter Andy Amenechi who turned 60 on September 27.
His fans, colleagues, mentees, and well-wishers took to their social media handles to celebrate the former president of the Directors Guild of Nigeria (DGN) who shared a post on Wednesday to mark his ascending the ‘6th floor’.
Amenechi had announced his new age on Facebook thus: “Ascended the 6th floor. Glory to God. 60 and Grateful. This 6th floor is kinda fulfilling.”
One of his mentees who is the current Public Relations Officer of the DGN, Perekeme Odion, said this about the prolific movie director on his big day: “It’s a big day for the iconic filmmaker Andy Amenechi as he hits the sixth floor.
As one of the most revered and influential filmmakers in modern Nigeria cinematic history, Andy Amenechi has amassed fans all over the globe, and many are coming out to celebrate the man and his works in honour of his birthday. As an avant-garde beneficiary of his crafts and in honour of his special day, I join others to say happy birthday.”
A filmmaker in the professional class who has over 30 years of cognate field experience in TV/ Film & Radio production, encompassing Advertising, Marketing, New Media production, and Multi-Media communication, including 25 years as a Film Producer/Director, Andy Amenechi contribution to the growth of Nollywood is significant, which is why it will be difficult to tell the story of Nollywood without a mention of the director of Mortal Inheritance (1996), Rituals (1997), Oracle (1998), the multiple award-winning Igodo (1999), Oduduwa (2000), Oracle (2002), Egg of Life (2003), and Don’t Leave Me (2022).
Currently, Executive Producer Silverscreen Associates and a Mass Communication graduate of the University of Nigeria Nsukka, Amenechi who is also a product of the Colorado Film School, the University of Ibadan Institute of African Studies, and the BBC/NTA Writers Workshop has a career goal of contributing in creating a veritable platform, where the creative art of film production in Nigeria, will be practiced in a structured, professional, regulated and conducive environment, with the potential for growth, backed by the requisite enabling laws and legislation.
Asked how it feels to be on the sixth floor, the ace movie director enthused: “The air seems purer here. Hurry up and join us.”
