The Flamingos have advanced to the quarter-finals of the India 2022 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after a 2-1 win over Chile today.
The Nigerian girls finished second in Group B with six points behind Germany, who won all their three first-round games.
Blessing Emmanuel and Bisola Mosaku were on target for the Flamingos at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar to earn the Nigerians a ticket to the knockout rounds.
Captain on the day Emmanuel fired the Flamingos in front early, scoring in the fourth minute off an assist from Opeyemi Ajakaye.
Bankole Olowookere’s girls created more opportunities to add to their lead in the first half but none was taken, and it was still 1-0 at half-time.
The Flamingos continued their dominance after the interval but did not get the breakthrough until late in the encounter.
Mosaku finally netted the second goal with eight minutes left to settle the nerves and all but seal victory.
The Chileans did not go down without fighting though, as they pulled one back from the penalty spot in added time.
The South Americans were awarded a penalty for handball after a Video Assistant Referee review and Tali Ravner converted for her second penalty goal of the tournament.
Germany beat New Zealand 3-1 in Goa to complete their 100 percent record and finish on top of the group.
The Flamingos will meet the winners of Group A in the quarter-finals on Friday in Mumbai.
The winners of the group will be decided later today and it is between United States of America and Brazil.
