Aribo’s Southampton hold Arsenal, Iheanacho benched as Leicester thrash Wolves

Southampton fought back today at St Mary’s Stadium to play a 1-1 draw with Premier League leaders Arsenal.

It is the Gunners’ first draw this season in their 11th league game as they stay two points ahead of second-placed Manchester City.

Super Eagles midfielder Joe Aribo started for the Saints, who went behind in the 11th minute when the in-form Granit Xhaka blasted the ball into the roof of the net from inside the box.

Southampton equalised 20 minutes into the second half when Stuart Armstrong finished off a brilliant team move.

Aribo came close to scoring in the first half but his shot after a clever turn was saved by Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.

The Nigeria international was taken off in the 73rd minute for Che Adams as Southampton made a double change, also bringing on former Arsenal forward Theo Walcott.

Also today in the Premier League, Super Eagles forward Kelechi Iheanacho was an unused substitute as Leicester City recorded a second consecutive victory with a 4-0 win at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Youri Tielemans, Harvey Barnes, James Madison and Jamie Vardy scored as the Foxes secured their first away win of the campaign.

The win moved Leicester City from the bottom of the table to the 16th spot.

Iheanacho has made 11 Premier League appearances this season but only one from the start. He has scored one goal.

Another Nigeria international, Frank Onyeka, was in Brentford’s starting line-up today but lasted for just 45 minutes as they were beaten 4-0 by Aston Villa at Villa Park.

In the fourth Premier League fixture today, Fulham featured Nigerian Tosin Adarabiayo in the heart of their defence as they edged last Leeds United 3-2 at Elland Road.
