Nigeria Football Federation president Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau is expected to be in India on Wednesday to cheer on the Flamingos when they face Colombia in the semi-final of the 2022 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
The NFF said today that Gusau, who has spoken with the players and officials several times during the tournament, “will physically witness the semi-final showdown at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Goa.”
The clash is the first semi-final of the tournament, and it kicks off at 4.30pm Indian time (12 noon in Nigeria), with the second semi-final between Germany and Spain to kick off three-and-half hours later.
Victory over Colombia – who defeated the only other African team to make the knockout stage Tanzania 3-0 in the quarter-finals – will take the Flamingos to their first-ever final of the competition, scheduled for Sunday.
To reach the semi-finals, Nigeria lost their opening Group B fixture 2-1 to Germany, but bounced back to beat New Zealand 4-0 and Chile 2-1.
The Flamingos upset the United States of America 4-3 on penalties in the quarter-finals after full-time ended 1-1, to reach their first-ever semi-final.
On their part, Colombia topped Group C after victories over China and Mexico, and a defeat to Spain.
They then thrashed 10-woman Tanzania 3-0 to set up Wednesday’s semi-final.
