Olympic Eagles advance past Tanzania in U-23 AFCON qualifiers

The Olympic Eagles are through to the final qualifying round for the 2023 U-23 Africa Cup of Nations after a 2-0 victory over Tanzania in Ibadan today.

The Nigeria U-23s advanced 3-1 on aggregate as the first leg ended 1-1 in Dar es Salaam last Saturday.

Buoyed by the promise of a $25,000 reward by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, the Olympic Eagles overcame a slow start to score twice in the second half.

Abiodun Oguniyi gave the Nigerians the lead 17 minutes after the break to ease the tension at the Lekan Salami Stadium, which was hosting a national team game for the first time in 28 years.

The Olympic Eagles then scored the ‘insurance’ goal from the penalty spot in the 70th minute as Success Makanjuola converted after Oguniyi was brought down in the Tanzania box.

Nigeria will face the winners of the tie between Uganda and Guinea for a ticket to the U-23 AFCON next year.

Morocco will next year host the tournament, which will serve as the qualifying competition for the Paris 2024 Olympics.

The African tournament will be held in June 2023.
