Globe Soccer Awards: Osimhen beats Madrid, Barca stars as Benzema claims main prize

Victor Osimhen has been named the Emerging Player of the Year at the Globe Soccer Awards in Dubai, beating Barcelona and Real Madrid’s midfielders Gavi and Federico Valverde.

Super Eagles striker Osimhen, Gavi and Valverde were the three finalists for the category for young players and the Napoli star was announced as the winner today ahead of the Barcelona and Real Madrid midfielders.

The other nominees that did not make it to the final were Bukayo Saka, Hareb Abdullah, Julian Alvarez, Jude Bellingham, Eduardo Camavinga, Francisco Conceiçao, Ryan Gravenberch, Josko Gvardiol, Nuno Mendes, Ilaix Moriba, Jamal Musiala, Pedri and Rafael Leao.

Osimhen, 23, has had a brilliant campaign so far this season with Napoli, scoring 10 goals in 14 appearances across all competitions and leading the Serie A top scorer race with nine goals.

Meanwhile, Karim Benzema won the main prize, the Best Men’s Player of the Year award.

The France and Real Madrid striker also recently won his first-ever Ballon d’Or after leading the Spanish giants to their 14th UEFA Champions League title in May.

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti was also rewarded with the Best Coach of the Year gong at the Dubai event.

There were recognitions for several retired and active stars, including Wayne Rooney, Romario and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who were all given Player Career Awards.

Paris Saint-Germain centre-back Sergio Ramos was named the Best Defender of Alll Time, while Mohamed Salah won the TikTok Fans’ Player of the Year award.

The Globe Soccer Awards honour football achievements across the world, but they are not as recognised as the Ballon d’Or or FIFA Awards.
