Cristiano Ronaldo became the first player to score at five World Cups tonight as he inspired Portugal to a thrilling 3-2 victory over Ghana in their Group H clash in Doha, Qatar.
The 37-year-old striker, whose Manchester United contract was terminated just two days ago, scored the opening goal from the penalty spot, as Rafael Leao and Joao Felix netted Portugal’s other goals.
Ghana captain Andre Ayew and substitute Osman Bukari scored Ghana’s goals in a barnstorming second half.
Ronaldo had two chances early on but a low shot was smothered by goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi and he also headed wide at the far post.
He then had a goal disallowed for a push on Alexander Djiku as Ghana kept Portugal at bay in a drab first half in which the Black Stars did not have a single shot.
Portugal got the first goal in controversial circumstances, with Ghana protesting vehemently after a penalty was awarded for Muhammed Salisu’s foul on Ronaldo.
Replays showed that the contact was minimal but the referee was not invited to have a second look by the Video Assistant Referee and the decision stood.
Ronaldo struck the spot kick firmly to open the scoring 20 minutes into the second half. Has now scored in five consecutive World Cups since his debut in Germany in 2006.
Ghana improved after going behind and they got their reward when Ayew equalised from close range eight minutes later for Africa’s first goal at the Qatar 2022 World Cup.
Stung Portugal then responded with two goals in two minutes to seal the points — Felix converting after being sent through by Bruno Fernandes and substitute Leao coolly netting in the 80th minute, just seconds after coming on.
Bukari headed in Ghana’s second in the 89th minute and there could have been real drama in the ninth minute of stoppage time.
Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa set the ball down for a goal kick, unaware that Inaki Williams was lurking behind him, but after racing to intercept the ball, the Ghana forward slipped at the crucial moment and could not take advantage.
Portugal now top Group H after Uruguay and South Korea played out a goalless draw earlier today.
