2023: INEC working with NCC to resolve possible transmission issues from blind network spots – Yakubu

THE Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu stated that the commission is already working to address potential issues with election results that might be brought on by blind network spots.

The INEC chairman reportedly said this today at a one-day strategic interactive session with newsmen in Lagos.

The INEC chairman’s response came after Nigerians expressed concerns about the viability of using the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) in locations with little network coverage because it was network-dependent.

On Tuesday, Yakubu announced, the commission would meet with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to discuss potential problems with the transmission of results on mobile networks.

He maintained that Nigerians needed not worry about the BVAS’s ability to transmit results effectively in the general elections of 2023.

The head of INEC also stated that they were working with NCC to ensure that results transmission in the elections of 2023 will be seamless.

“INEC has identified blind spots (where there is poor or no networks) and we are working to make sure there won’t be any problem.

“We are working with the NCC to make sure we transmit from blind spots. They are the network regulators and they will be very vital to that.

“We are making sure and working hard so that we transmit freely all around the country,” he said.

,INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye, appealed to the media to continue supporting the commission’s fight against disinformation.

Okoye stated that with 84 days till the general elections, the commission was becoming concerned about the spread of false information about the electoral procedures.

For the general elections in 2023 to be successful, he said, the media must help combat the threat of misleading information.

Olusegun Agbaje, the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner for Lagos State, stated also in his introductory remarks that the media has continued to play a crucial role in upholding democracy in Nigeria.

He pleaded with the media to continue helping the commission ensure that information about the upcoming elections was accurate and balanced.
