BRENTFORD secured their first victory over Liverpool since 1938 tonight by beating their much more illustrious opponents 3-1 at the Brentford Community Stadium.

Brentford’s Nigeria international Frank Onyeka missed the huge win with a thigh injury, which has now kept him out for three games.

With the result, Liverpool missed the chance to reduce the gap to the Premier League’s top four as the hosts punished their defensive weaknesses.

An Ibrahima Konate own goal and strikes from Yoane Wissa and Bryan Mbeumo sealed the famous win for the Bees, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain got Liverpool’s goal.

Liverpool conceded twice in the first half, with Konate, who played for France in the Qatar 2022 World Cup final, deflecting a corner into his own net after 19 minutes.

They let in two more to Wissa, but both were chalked off by VAR for offside before the same player extended Brentford’s lead.

Moments after the second disallowed effort from Wissa, the Democratic Republic of Congo striker headed home past a desperately diving Alisson in the in the 42nd minute after Liverpool had given the ball away.

A frustrated Jurgen Klopp made three changes at half-time, including replacing captain Virgil van Dijk with Joel Matip, and Liverpool responded almost instantly, as they pulled one back through Oxlade-Chamberlain within five minutes of the restart.

But six minutes to the end of regulation time, Cameroon striker Mbeumo completed the superb win, brushing off Konate before expertly firing home.

Brentford are now unbeaten in six games, which is their best run in the top flight for more than 80 years, and climb to seventh.

Liverpool stay sixth, two points clear of the Bees but four adrift of fourth-placed Manchester United, who face Bournemouth tomorrow night.
