IT‘s a fresh start this new year, and I believe you might have things planned out already, goals set, new year resolutions in place. Some parents have also mapped out personal development goals for themselves, but have you set up your parenting goals for the year?
If you don’t have parenting goals set out, as well as a road map on how to achieve them, then you might not be able to evaluate your parenting game at the end of this year.
The importance of setting parenting goals cannot be overemphasized.
It gives you an opportunity to pick out areas you would love to work on and improve on as you raise your children per time.
For instance, one of your goals could be to get your child to have a better pencil grip in 2 months from now, it could be to get your child to be more organised, it could be for your child to have a wider vocabulary, and for you the parent, it could be to work on yourself such that in 6 months from now, the rate at which you yell would be drastically reduced.
How to go about achieving these goals is very important too.
It could be you taking parenting classes and improving your parenting skills, or it could be you spending more time with your children if your goal is to improve your bond and connection with them.
If you want to take your parenting journey to the next level this year, there are 3 things you need to be clear about;
1. You must be clear about your vision.
☑️ What kind of parent are you?
☑️ What is your parenting style?
☑️ What goals are you working towards, concerning your children?
☑️ What is your big picture for this year as regards your parenting journey?
2 . You must be very clear about what is important to you.
☑️ What are your values?
☑️ What do you stand for?
☑️ What are the things that are non-negotiable to you?
3. You must be clear about what you can and cannot tolerate.
☑️ Do you have structure in place in your home, or anything goes?
☑️ Do you have boundaries in place?
☑️ Do you have rules and consequences in place?
☑️ Do you have a system in place to hold your children accountable for their actions?
Dear Parents, taking some time out to answer these questions with clarity and creating a vision of the kind of home you want to have and the kind of children you want to raise is a great way to start this year.
Having the big picture of your parenting goals will put you on track. It will give you some sort of driving force to get ahead and smash those goals.
