U-20 AFCON: Senegal beat Gambia to complete clean sweep, Nigeria win award

SENEGAL defeated The Gambia 2-0 at the Cairo International Stadium tonight to clinch the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations title.

Souleymane Faye and Mamadou Camara struck to steer the Teranga Cubs to victory over their West African neighbours and earn them their first U-20 AFCON trophy.

Senegal have now achieved the unprecedented feat of holding four African titles in different categories all at once.

They won the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt in February 2022, the Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations in Mozambique in October 2022, the African Nations Championship in Algeria last month, and now the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

Faye headed them in front in the first half tonight before Camara added another headed goal in the second half to wrap up the final against a Young Scorpions side that had not conceded in the run-up to the title decider.

The Gambia will leave Egypt with their heads held high having reached their first-ever final of the competition after previously finishing third twice.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Flying Eagles, who claimed bronze by beating Tunisia 3-0 yesterday, have been named as the winners of the Fairplay Award by the Confederation of African Football.

Champions Senegal swept all the individual awards, with Paper Diop emerging as the top scorer and winner of the Golden Boot with six goals, Lamine Camara the best player and Golden Ball winner, and goalkeeper Landing Badji claiming the Golden Glove.
