Odegaard blasts Arsenal teammates for ‘stupid things’ in draw vs West Ham

ARSENAL captain Martin Odegaard has laid into his teammates for letting a two-goal lead slip against West Ham yesterday.

The Gunners were 2-0 up at the London City Stadium courtesy of early goals from Gabriel Jesus and Odegaard but the hosts levelled through a Said Benrahma penalty and Jarrod Bowen strike, with Bukayo Saka missing a spot kick for the visitors.

It was the second consecutive match in which Arsenal blew a 2-0 advantage in one week, following the same result against Liverpool at Anfield the previous matchday.

It was the first time ever in the Premier League that Arsenal have failed to win in back-to-back games after taking two-goal leads.

“There was a lot of the same things to last week; started well but then we stopped, allowed them to play on their qualities,” Odegaard told Sky Sports.

“We gave them the game they wanted, we gave them hope, and that’s on us. We have to look forward now.

“Plus, we started to do a lot of stupid things on the ball, we allowed them to play on the long balls.”

Despite the setback, Arsenal are still on top of the Premier League, but their previously big lead has been cut down to four points over second-placed Manchester City, who have a game in hand.

“We have to remember we are still top of the league with everything in our own hands,” the Norway midfielder added.

“Now, we need to have the same mindset, same mentality to make sure we win the next one.”

Next up for Arsenal are bottom team Southampton on Friday as the Gunners continue their search for their first Premier League title since 2004.
