VICTOR Osimhen has paid tribute to George Weah after breaking the Liberian President’s record in Serie A.
The Super Eagles striker scored his 23rd Serie A goal of the season on Sunday as Serie A champions Napoli defeated Fiorentina 1-0 at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.
With the strike, the Nigeria international became the African player with the most Serie A goals of all time as he reached 47 overall, one more than Weah scored during his spell at AC Milan from 1995 to 2000.
While Osimhen has scored his 47 goals in 79 appearances, it took Weah 114 games to reach 46 goals.
“While growing up, I have always admired the great achievements of so many African legends and His Excellency Mr GEORGE WEAH is one of them, an icon in the world of football and also a leader to his people. Someone who has motivated and inspired millions of young talents alike,” Osimhen wrote on Twitter today.
“Yesterday, it was a great honour breaking his record as the top scoring African player in Serie A history, an achievement I will forever cherish.
“Mr George Weah has set a foundation of excellence for individuals like me to emulate and his legacy will forever be remembered.
“I celebrate this milestone with everyone who has inspired and supported me in this journey. Thank you for your contributions, GOD IS THE GREATEST.”
Before last night’s record, Osimhen had already made another piece of history. He became the African with the most goals in a Serie A campaign when he scored against Udinese to seal the Scudetto for Napoli last week.
It was his 22nd goal of the season, surpassing the previous record of 21 set by Cameroon’s Samuel Eto’o with Inter Milan in the 2010/2011 season.
