Sevilla edge Roma to win seventh Europa League trophy

SEVILLA defeated AS Roma 4-1 on penalties tonight to win the UEFA Europa League final at the Puskas Arena in Budapest, Hungary.

It is the Spanish side’s seventh title in the competition and the first time Roma manager Jose Mourinho would be losing a European final.

Full-time and extra-time ended 1-1 after a mostly scrappy match, and Sevilla converted all their four penalties while Roma missed two of the three they took.

Paulo Dybala gave Roma the lead in the 35th minute, finishing low into the net from a quick move.

Sevilla were more positive after the break and they got the equaliser 10 minutes in when Gianluca Mancini inadvertently diverted Jesus Navas’ cross into his own net.

The Spanish side were the more dominant team after their equaliser but they could not break down the Italians, whom centre-back Chris Smalling was brilliant for.

Roma did have the best chances late into extra-time though, especially through set-pieces, and Smalling almost won it for them at the death, heading against the crossbar.

In the penalty shootout, Sevilla’s Moroccan goalkeeper Bono saved Mancini and Roger Ibanez’s kicks, while Lucas Ocampos, Erik Lamela, Ivan Rakitic and Gonzo Montiel all converted for the Spanish side.
