SUPER Falcons defender Michelle Alozie has said that she holds no grudges and was not hurt by Lauren James’ stamp on her during today’s 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup defeat to England in Brisbane, Australia.
Chelsea forward James was sent off in the 87th minute of the round of 16 encounter after deliberately stepping on a prone Alozie, but England held on to take the game to penalties, which they won 4-2.
“It was good for us to have her taken out of the game,” Alozie said.
“I was a little bit surprised by her reaction to the tackle. I don’t think it was really needed. I’m fine, my butt is fine from her stepping on it.
“I was kind of confused initially. I didn’t understand what was going on at first. There’s no hard feelings, it’s just a game.”
England head coach Sarina Wiegman blamed James’ rash action on the emotions of the game and her inexperience.
James, who has three goals and three assists in the tournament, was sent off following a video assistant referee (VAR) review.
“It’s a huge lesson for her to learn,” Wiegman said.
“She would never want to hurt someone. She is the sweetest person I know. It was late in the game so players get a little tired.
“She is inexperienced on this stage and in a split-second lost her emotions. It isn’t something she did on purpose. She apologised and felt really bad.”
The tense, hard-fought clash ended 0-0 after full-time and extra-time before the European champions prevailed in the penalty shootout.
