FLYING Eagles defender Benjamin Frederick has made a surprise switch to the B team of Brentford, the Premier League club confirmed today.
The Nigerian youth international was a key member of the Flying Eagles side that reached the quarter-finals of the FIFA U-20 World Cup earlier this year in Argentina, featuring four times in the tournament.
“We are pleased to announce the signing of Benjamin Fredrick on loan from Simoiben FC until the end of the 2023/24 season. The move is subject to international clearance. There is also an option to make the signing permanent,” the club announced on their official website today.
“The central defender will join up with Neil MacFarlane’s B team for the campaign.”
Frederick also featured for the Nigeria U-20s at the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt earlier in the year, playing all six games as Ladan Bosso’s side finished third and secured a ticket to the World Cup.
The 18-year-old defender has also had loan spells at ABS FC of Ilorin and Nasawara United of Lafia in recent seasons.
Brentford B head coach Neil MacFarlane said: “Benjamin is a player who has been identified by our recruitment department and he’s a real prospect having impressed for Nigeria in recent tournaments.
“He’s a very tenacious player who likes to defend on the front foot. He’s somebody we will look to develop through our games programme, and we’ll see how his development progresses over the course of his loan. We look forward to welcoming Benjamin to the club.”
