MANCHESTER United have announced that their player Antony will resume training with the club while police carry on investigations into allegations of assault against him.
The Brazil forward was withdrawn from the squad and kept out of training about three weeks ago following the publication of an interview with his former girlfriend in which she gave details of how he allegedly repeatedly assaulted her while they were dating.
Antony insisted that he was innocent and made himself available to the police both in Brazil and England.
“Since allegations were first made in June, Antony has co-operated with police inquiries in both Brazil and the UK, and he continues to do so,” Manchester United said in a statement today.
“As Antony’s employer, Manchester United has decided that he will resume training at Carrington, and be available for selection, while police inquiries proceed. This will be kept under review pending further developments in the case.
“As a club, we condemn acts of violence and abuse. We recognise the importance of safeguarding all those involved in this situation, and acknowledge the impact these allegations have on survivors of abuse.”
Antony returned to England from Brazil on Wednesday and reports say he was interviewed by the Greater Manchester Police yesterday after which he was allowed to go without charges or any restrictions.
He will not train with the United team today and will not be available for tomorrow’s Premier League clash against Crystal Palace at Old Trafford.
