THE Euro 2024 qualifying match between Belgium and Sweden in Brussels was abandoned tonight after two fans were killed near the King Baudouin Stadium.
The two fans, wearing Sweden shirts, were shot dead shortly before kick-off outside the stadium in the Belgian capital but the game initially went ahead.
Sweden took the lead and the hosts, who have already booked their spots in Germany for the tournament next summer, equalised before half-time.
Although the authorities did not immediately call off the match, the players from both sides refused to come out for the second half when they heard about the killings, and the match was then officially abandoned.
As at the time of this report, the perpetrators had not been arrested and the Belgian police advised fans to stay in the stadium for the time being.
Reports from Belgium said the police were treating the situation as a terrorist incident.
