NEC NIJMEGEN striker Bas Dost is on the way back to full recovery after collapsing in the late stages of yesterday’s Dutch Eredivisie clash between AZ Alkmaar and his club.

The 34-year-old Dutchman has said he is ‘doing well’ after the incident, which led to the game being abandoned in stoppage time.

Dost regained consciousness and acknowledged the fans as he was carried off on a stretcher in Alkmaar.

NEC were leading 2-1 after 91 minutes, with Dost starring by scoring the opening goal and assisting his side’s second.

Players from both clubs formed a ring around Dost as he received treatment.

“The help I received on the field was fantastic,” Dost said in a message shared on NEC’s social media.

“I’m in the hospital now and I feel good. Thanks for all the support!”

Dost is the second high-profile case in recent times of a professional footballer collapsing unchallenged while in action, following Christian Eriksen’s cardiac arrest during the European Championships in 2021.

Thankfully, Denmark midfielder Eriksen has fully recovered and plays regularly for his country and Manchester United.

Dost joined NEC this season from Utrecht having previously played for Heracles, Heerenveen, Wolfburg, Sporting Lisbon and Club Brugge in a long and successful career.
