THE Lagos State Government has canceled the 50% transit fare discount on all public transportation systems that was imposed in response to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s directive on August 2, 2023.

The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) declared a return to the former public transportation charges today in a public notice.

The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority statement partly read: “The 50% rebate in transport fare in the regulated transport system in Lagos ends on Sunday.”

The statement mentioned further that starting “from Monday, November 6, 2023, transport fare will return to the pre-2nd August 2023 rate.

It also urged Lagos residents to take note of the change and prepare for the return of regular transport fee rates that were in place prior to the August adjustment.

Governor Sanwo-Olu announced on July 31 a 50% reduction in transportation fees for state-owned buses and a 25% reduction in commercial yellow buses on all routes as part of attempts to mitigate the impact of the elimination of the gasoline subsidy.

He said that the bus fare reduction was meant to take effect on Wednesday, August 2, 2023, noting the extension of the fleet of staff buses for the Lagos State Public Service workers to mitigate the effect of the subsidy removal. He stated that the buses are ready and will be distributed through the state’s office of the Head of Service.
