PRESIDENT Bola Tinubu has congratulated the Super Eagles of Nigeria and showered gifts and national honours on them them for finishing as runners-up at the AFCON 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire.
The three-time African champions defeated Cote d’Ivoire, Cameroon and South Africa on their way to the final where they were defeated 2-1 by the hosts in Abijdan on Sunday night.
As a show of appreciation from the nation, President Tinubu hosted the squad and the coaches today in Abuja, and announced the rewards.
Each member of the squad has been conferred with the national honour of Member of the Order of the Niger (MON), which is reserved for Nigeria’s heroes.
The players will also receive a plot of land in Abuja each as well as a flat in parts of the country.
The Super Eagles returned to Nigeria yesterday after their impressive run in Cote d’Ivoire, and they arrived in Abuja in the night.
The team, coached by Jose Peseiro, had the best defence in the tournament going into the final, conceding just two goals in six matches, and kept four clean sheets.
On-field captain William Troost-Ekong was named the Player of the Tournament for his role in the solid defence and his three goals that helped the Super Eagles to the final.
