Olympics: Dates, referees confirmed for crucial Super Falcons vs South Africa tie

 

 

THE schedule has been fixed and referees named for the Paris 2024 Olympics women’s football event qualifying tie between the Super Falcons of Nigeria and African champions South Africa.

The first leg of the tie between Africa’s most successful women’s national team and the continent’s current champions is billed for the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja on Friday, April 5 and the return fixture four days later.

The first leg in Abuja will kick off at 4pm, with Algerian Ghada Mehat as referee. Mehat’s compatriots Asma Feriel Ouahab and Lamia Atman will be the assistant referee 1 and fourth official respectively, while Mariem Cheddad from Mauritania will serve as assistant referee 2.

Senegalese Fadouma Dia, a former FIFA referee, will be the referee assessor while Ghanaian Chrstine Ziga will serve as match commissioner.

For the return leg scheduled for South Africa (venue to be decided) on Tuesday, April 9, the Confederation of African Football has appointed Tunisian official Dorsaf Ganouati as the referee. She will be assisted by compatriots Houda Afine (assistant referee 1) and Emna Ajbouni (fourth official) with Egyptian Yara Atef Abdelfattah as assistant referee 2.

Agar Mezing from Cameroon will be the referee assessor while Cindy Dludlu from eSwatini will be commissioner.

The Super Falcons overcame Cameroon’s Indomitable Lionesses to advance to this final qualifying round, winning by a single goal over the two legs scored by Esther Okoronkwo at the MKO Abiola National Stadium.

On their part, Banyana Banyana trounced Tanzania 4-0 on aggregate over two games in Dar es Salaam and Nelspruit.

The winners on aggregate between the Super Falcons and Banyana Banyana will qualify for the women’s football event of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, billed for July.
