Confirmed: Finidi George to coach Super Eagles against Ghana, Mali

FINIDI George will head the Super Eagles of Nigeria coaching crew for the friendly matches against Ghana and Mali in Marrakech, Morocco, it has been confirmed.

The three-time African champions face fierce rivals Ghana on Friday and fellow West Africans Mali four days later in their first games after the AFCON 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire in January and February.

There had been speculation regarding who would handle the Super Eagles for the friendlies following the exit of Jose Peseiro, with Finidi, Austin Eguavoen and Emmanuel Amuneke being mentioned.

It has now been confirmed by the Super Eagles media team that former Nigeria, Ajax and Real Betis winger Finidi will be in temporary charge.

The Super Eagles account on X, formerly known as Twitter, posted a picture of Finidi meeting with Nigeria Football Federation technical officials today, with the caption: “Coach George Finidi has held a meeting with Super Eagles team officials as he leads the Super Eagles in international friendlies against Ghana and Mali.”

Finidi, who is currently the head coach of Nigeria Premier Football League champions Enyimba having led them to the title last year, was part of Peseiro’s crew to AFCON 2023, where the Super Eagles finished as runners-up to hosts Cote d’Ivoire.
