African Games: Tobi Amusan completes ‘golden hat-trick’ as Okezie clinches gold

WORLD record holder Tobi Amusan has won her third consecutive 100 metres hurdles title at the African Games.

The 26-year-old Team Nigeria star stormed to gold tonight in Accra, Ghana, winning the final in 12.89 seconds despite being on a warning after an initial false start.

Amusan has now completed a remarkable hat-trick of women’s 100m hurdles titles having also won the event’s gold at the African Games in Brazzaville, Congo in 2015 and Rabat, Morocco in 2019.

The 2022 World Athletics Championship gold medallist was a class above the rest of the African Games field despite her relatively slow time, as Madagascar’s Sidonie Fiadanantsoa finished second in 13.19s and Tinashe Kamangirira claimed bronze in 13.59s.

Amusan’s fellow Nigerian Faith Osamuyi was fourth in 13.77s, just missing out on a medal.

Amusan’s gold was Team Nigeria’s second of the evening, with Chidi Okezie having clinched the men’s 400m title earlier.

Okezie produced a strong finish to win in 45.06s to improve from his Rabat 2019 bronze to gold, while Zambia’s Muzala Samukonga claimed silver in 45.37s.

Tidiane Diouf of Senegal clocked 45.49s to bag the bronze medal, while Nigeria’s other representative in the final, Dubem Nwanchukwu, finished a disappointing eighth in 47.13s.
