TOKYO 2020 Olympics gold medallist Peres Jepchirchir of Kenya has won today’s London Marathon in a women’s only world-record.
The 30-year-old clocked 2 hours, 16 minutes and 16 seconds to win the prestigious marathon for the first time.
Jepchirchir sprinted away in the last 300 metres in front of Buckingham Palace to break Mary Keitany’s mark of 2:17:01 set in a women-only race at the 2017 London event.
Tigst Assefa of Ethiopia, who clocked 2:11.53 at the Berlin Marathon in September to set a world record for women in a race alongside male runners, finished second in 2:16.23.
Assefa, Megertu Alemu, also of Ethiopia, and Kenya’s Joyciline Jepkosgei all beat the previous women’s only record of 2:17:01.
