THE Nigeria Football Federation will officially confirm the appointment of Finidi George as the new head coach of the Super Eagles tomorrow in Abuja.

The former Super Eagles winger was announced as the successor to Jose Peseiro last month but there were still issues to be worked out before he could officially start work.

The NFF stated today that there will be a ceremony in the nation’s capital tomorrow to formally present Finidi to the public as the substantive head coach of the Super Eagles.

Sports minister John Enoh, alongside Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mrs Tinuke Watti, NFF president Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau and the NFF General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, are all expected at the presentation.

The 53-year-old Finidi, who began his coaching career at Real Betis academy in Spain, led Enyimba to win the Nigeria Premier Football League title last year and worked as one of Peseiro’s assistants for close to two years.

The former Ajax winger has left Enyimba in third place in the NPFL table, four points adrift of leaders Rangers with four matches to go.

Finidi was part of the technical crew that steered the Super Eagles to a runners-up finish at the last Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire and is believed to be respected by the players.

As a player, Finidi won 62 caps for Nigeria at senior level, during which he won AFCON gold in 1994, silver in 2000 and bronze in 1992.

He also played in two FIFA World Cups and had a successful career in Europe where he won the 1995 UEFA Champions League title and Dutch league trophies with Ajax Amsterdam.

Finidi’s first challenge as Super Eagles head coach is earning victories in 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against South Africa (home) and Benin Republic (away) in June.
