THE Flamingos of Nigeria secured their spot in the eighth FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup tonight with a 2-0 victory over Liberia at the MKO Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.
Having won the first leg of the final qualifying tie 4-1 on Sunday in Monrovia, the Flamingos blew Liberia away 6-1 on aggregate to advance to the tournament that will be held in the Dominican Republic later this year.
Top scorer in the qualifying campaign Harmony Chidi struck twice today, taking her tally in the series to an impressive 13 goals.
Chidi netted her first goal today after only four minutes when she sped past the Liberian defence to steer the ball beyond the flailing arms of goalkeeper Makula Konneh from a cross by Shakirat Moshood.
The Flamingos had several opportunities to increase their lead, with Peace Effiong and Moshood missing presentable opportunities to bury their fellow West Africans.
Chidi finally scored the second goal just past the hour mark when she profited from a defensive slip-up to smash the ball past a helpless Konneh.
The 2024 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup finals will be hosted in the cities of Santiago de los Caballeros and Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic from October 16 to November 3.
The Flamingos finished third in the last edition of the tournament, which was won by Colombia.
