JUSTICE Emeka Nwite has rejected the bail applications of suspended deputy commissioner of police, Abba Kyari, and two other suspended senior police officers.
The court in separate judgment, ruled that the defendants failed to present any evidence in court sufficient to justify the court exercising its discretion.
Justice Nwite emphasized the need for the court to carefully consider its discretion, stating that, in this instance, bail cannot be granted to the defendants.
Kyari has been in custody since his arrest on February 14, 2022, by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) concerning an alleged cocaine transaction.
The suspended leader of the IRT unit and four other suspended officers were formally charged on March 7, 2022.
Additionally, two suspected drug traffickers, Chibunna Umeibe and Emeka Ezenwanne, apprehended at Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu, were also charged as well.
The accused were alleged to have trafficked 17.55 kilograms of cocaine, contravening section 14(b) of the NDLEA Act, CAP N30 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.
Recall that the court initially had denied bail to the defendants and ordered their remand in Kuje prison.
