NOAH Lyles won the men’s 100m gold at the Paris 2024 Olympics tonight, beating a strong field of top athletes who all returned fast times.
The American became the first man from his country to win 100m gold since 2004, while Nigeria’s two semi-finalists, Kayinsola Ajayi and Favour Ashe, failed to reach the final.
Lyles, who did not win his first round heat and his semi-final, saved his best for the final, claiming gold in 10.79 seconds.
Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson, the fastest man in the world this year, won silver in a photo finish, clocking the same 9.79s as Lyles but beaten by milliseconds.
Another United States of America athlete, Fred Kerley, clinched bronze in 9.81s, while South Africa’s Akani Simbine just missed out on a medal, finishing fourth in a new national record of 9.82s.
The final was the deepest 100m race of all time, with all the runners clocking sub-10 seconds, and Jamaica’s Oblique Seville timing 9.91s to finish in eighth and last place.
It was also the first time in history that eight men have broken 10 seconds in a wind-legal race.
Ajayi (10.13s) and Ashe (10.08s) missed out on the sensational race after finishing sixth in each of their semi-final heats.
