ARSENAL began their English Premier League campaign today with a routine 2-0 victory over Wolves at the Emirates Stadium.
Meanwhile, none of the Super Eagles stars who were in action today — Ola Aina, Taiwan Awoniyi and Joe Aribo — tasted victory as Nottingham Forest drew 1-1 at home to Bournemouth and Southampton were beaten 1-0 by 10-man Newcastle United.
At the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal were dominant against the visiting Wolves, and England international with Nigerian heritage Bukayo Saka was involved in both goals.
Saka assisted Kai Havertz for the opening goal in the 25th minute and then struck the second 16 minutes from time.
At the City Ground, Aina was on from the start and lasted 54 minutes, while Awoniyi replaced goalscorer Chris Woods in the 72nd minute.
Woods gave Forest the lead in the 23rd minute but Ghana striker Antoine Semenyo levelled up for the visitors with just four minutes left of regulation time.
Aribo also started for Southampton and was withdrawn in the 70th minute as the Saints fell at St James’ Park despite a red card to Newcastle centre-back Fabian Schar in the 28th minute.
Joelinton scored the only goal of the encounter on the stroke of half-time to hand Newcastle the three points against the newcomers.
In the other Premier League afternoon kick-off today, Brighton thrashed their hosts Everton 3-0 at Goodison Park, with Cote d’Ivoire winger Simon Adingra on the scoresheet.
