THE Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) have declared an indefinite nationwide strike, set to begin from midnight on May 1, 2026, citing delays in negotiations with the Federal Government of Nigeria.
In a joint letter dated April 30 and signed by NASU General Secretary, Mohammed Ibrahim, the unions said the decision followed the government’s failure to conclude renegotiations and present a revised offer on allowances.
They noted that although a previous circular proposing a 30 percent increase in the consolidated non-teaching tools allowance had been withdrawn, no alternative proposal had been introduced to address their demands.
According to the unions, the slow pace of discussions fell short of expectations, prompting members to direct their leadership to take action if no agreement was reached by the end of April.
They accused the government of failing to prevent the crisis through meaningful engagement, adding that all members would embark on a “total and comprehensive” strike until their concerns are adequately addressed.
