TEAM Nigeria produced a commanding performance on the continental stage to emerge as the champions in the women’s category at the 2026 African Senior Wrestling Championships in Alexandria, Egypt yesterday.
The African giants secured the title for a record 15th time after winning eight gold and two silver medals from 10 events in the women’s division to reiterate the nation’s dominance in wrestling on the continent.
Gold medalists for Team Nigeria include Mercy Genesis, Adijat Idris, Esther Asaolu and Mercy Adekuoroye, who all produced brilliant performances to extend Nigeria’s impressive medal haul in Alexandria.
In the men’s freestyle category, Harrison Onovwiomogbhwo stunned home favourite Mohamed Mostafa of Egypt with a 10-4 victory to win Nigeria’s only gold medal in the division.
Nigeria also secured silver medals through Ebierelayefa Andrew and Stephen Akintewe, while Dideikemei Erefagha, Solomon Ulabo and Saviour Egoli earned bronze medals to help the men’s team finish third overall.
President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, commended the wrestlers for their resilience, discipline and patriotism throughout the championship campaign.
The National Sports Commission hailed the athletes, coaches, the Nigeria Wrestling Federation and officials for another outstanding continental outing that continues to reinforce Nigeria’s status as a wrestling powerhouse in Africa.
