Veteran Nollywood actor Kanayo O. Kanayo has called for an end to xenophobic attacks in South Africa while receiving the Industry Merit Award at the 12th edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards.
Speaking during his acceptance speech on Saturday, the celebrated actor dedicated the award to film practitioners across Africa and paid tribute to veteran actors and crew members who helped shape the continent’s movie industry.
“This award is for Africa and for everyone who works both in front of and behind the camera,” he said. “Many of the pioneers who built this industry before 1992 are no longer in good health, some have returned to their villages, while others have passed on.”
Kanayo also reflected on the sacrifices that have defined his decades-long career in Nollywood, expressing gratitude for his continued relevance and longevity in the industry.
“Sometimes, when you stand on a stage like this, you ask yourself, ‘What have I done to still be alive?’ The truth is that this journey has come with a lot of sacrifices,” he added.
The actor used the moment to advocate for unity and mutual respect across the African continent, condemning xenophobic violence and urging Africans to embrace one another beyond national borders.
