2027: Will Jonathan run for President after waiver from PDP faction?

A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki has cleared former President Goodluck Jonathan as its sole presidential candidate for the 2027 election, granting him a waiver from formal screening.

The faction’s screening committee, chaired by former Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu, announced the decision on May 19 in Abuja.

Committee members cited Jonathan’s prior roles — deputy governor, governor, vice president, and president — as justification for the waiver, effectively declaring him the party’s candidate.

Some PDP chieftains claimed Jonathan had obtained nomination forms, with expectations of a public submission.

However, he did not attend the screening or form submission, and his office has issued no confirmation or statement endorsing the move.

Jonathan has maintained a cautious stance.

Responding to youth groups urging him to contest, he said earlier this month: “The presidential race is not a computer game. I have heard you. I will consult widely.”

No formal declaration of intent has followed.

The PDP remains deeply divided, with rival factions, ongoing court battles, and uncertainty over Independent National Electoral Commission recognition.

A Federal High Court in Abuja is scheduled to deliver judgment on May 26 in a suit challenging Jonathan’s eligibility.

As of today, Jonathan continues consultations without committing to the race. The faction’s action has intensified speculation ahead of the January 2027 elections, but his personal decision remains pending.
